About Us

History
San Yu Learning Center was founded in 1996 by Ms. Peggy Lian, Mr. Bertram Chan, Ph.D., Mr. Gene Lee and Ms. Cory Tang, with a common vision in mind: to provide quality after-school education, with love and patience.

These were the founding members of San Yu Learning Center. Ms. Lian, a high school principal, holds an M.A. in Education with a wealth of teaching and administrative experience in high school and elementary school education, as well as after-school care. Mr. Chan, a university president and professor, contributes not only his math specialty to the Center, but also his science & engineering educational background. Mr. Lee has utilized his strong business skills to run our organization efficiently and effectively.  Ms. Tang was a high school Chinese teacher in China, and has taught Chinese in the Silicon Valley for many years. Their desire to make a positive impact in the South Bay communities was carried out by many devoted teachers, staff members, and volunteers who have established this enjoyable environment.

In its early stages, San Yu Learning Center worked in collaboration with many members from South Bay Chinese Seventh-day Adventist Church. Thanks to the generous donations of time, as well as financial support provided by the church congregation, San Yu Learning Center was able to overcome its many barriers, and provide a service to the local community. The founding donations from Ms. Marie Nashed Chan and Ms. Elsie Chang play a significant role in the Center's achievement.

Today there are approximately fifty children, ranging from ages 5 to 12, six teachers and staff members, and a governing board overseeing the school operations and future planning. With our added transportation arrangement, parents can concentrate on their work responsibilities, without worrying about their children's after-school activities.

Our principals include Ms. Peggy Lian (1996 - 2005), Ms. Susan Hsiao (2006 - 2008), and, currently, Ms. Jane Bai, who have all made significant efforts and contributions in service.

Program at a Glance

While focusing on the Chinese language and culture, math, and a few elective classes, the program has also provided activities such as painting, singing, music with string instruments, and handcrafting. We have arranged ample opportunities for students to show their talents in public performances, which many educators consider the best way to enhance self-confidence. Students and parents are also encouraged to participate in sporting events, as well as special holiday festivities provided by the Mountain View Chinese Seventh-day Adventist Church. Our children's laughter can always be heard at the center, on field trips, and at public performances and holiday events.

Special Events

Over the years, San Yu Learning Center has organized a few special events in addition to the regular classroom programs. In particular, with the help of our experienced language teachers, the center organized an international camp to teach English to a group of twenty foreign students from Taiwan. Upon graduation, each went home with a certificate of completion for the English program, along with unforgettable friendships developed between the teachers and the host families.

During 2001 and 2005, we organized two summer camps that each offered a season-long adventure of exciting educational and sporting activities, such as advanced Chinese, math, mental arithmetic, Chinese Kung-Fu, Chinese Choreography, STAR/SAT preparation, and swim lessons.
